What food can reasonably do

Hair is produced by some of the most metabolically active cells in the body. Adequate overall nutrition supports that process working normally.

That is the honest claim: support for normal function. These foods support normal nutrition and hair biology. No individual food is proven to make everyone's hair grow faster.

Protein

Provides the amino acid building blocks used in keratin production.

  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Poultry
  • Greek yogurt
  • Tofu
  • Beans
  • Lentils

Iron

Supports oxygen delivery to metabolically active tissue, including the follicle.

  • Lean meats
  • Beans and lentils
  • Fortified cereals and foods
  • Leafy greens

Pairing plant iron sources with vitamin C-rich foods can support absorption.

Zinc

Involved in protein synthesis and cell division.

  • Shellfish where appropriate
  • Meat
  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

Vitamin D

Involved in follicle cycling; dietary sources are limited, which is why fortified foods matter.

  • Fatty fish
  • Egg yolks
  • Fortified foods

Vitamin C

Supports collagen formation and helps the body absorb plant-source iron.

  • Citrus
  • Berries
  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli

Dietary fats

Support normal cell membranes and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

  • Fatty fish
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Olive oil and other everyday fat sources

Putting it on a plate

  • Breakfast — eggs with spinach and wholegrain toast, plus citrus.
  • Lunch — lentil and roasted-pepper salad with pumpkin seeds and olive oil.
  • Dinner — salmon, brown rice and broccoli.
  • Plant-based day — tofu stir-fry with beans, sesame seeds and bell peppers.
